2019 Tree Climbers Rendezvous

Pre and Post Trips

The 2019 Tree Climbers Rendezvous kicks off at noon on Sunday, October 13th and runs through noon on Wednesday, October 16th.

Note: Depending on the resort’s occupancy the prior night, rooms might not be available until 3 pm on the 13th. You can still check in at noon and enjoy what the resort has to offer.

If anyone would like to stay at Redwood River Resort an extra evening (Wednesday, Oct 16th), they will have to make his/her own reservations. Otherwise, participants can return to the Bay area for organically organized group activities or start heading south to the Monterey Bay area for activities starting on Thursday, October 17th.

The Pre and Post trips are not included in the cost of the Rendezvous.

Tree Tour - Berkeley

Tuesday, October 8th - Afternoon activity

Location:

Berkeley Campus

Description:

UC Berkeley Campus Tour of Trees. Eric Folmer and Richard Trout, former campus arborist will guide. The tour includes a visit to the Strawberry Creek Eucalyptus Grove, confirmed as the tallest grove of hardwood trees in North America by a Treewolf Team tape drop. Visits to unique other trees including the first Dawn Redwoods planted from seeds brought back from China 1948 after the rediscovery of the species. Dinner at a restaurant in the area. Meet at 1 pm on the west side of Campus by the cedars in the picture. It is at the corner of Oxford and Center Street at Crescent Lawn. It is one block from the Downtown Berkeley Bart Station. Parking in the area is limited.

Lodging:

Tree Tour – San Francisco

Date and Time:

Wednesday, October 9th. All day.

Location:

San Francisco

Description:

Tour of the San Francisco Botanical Garden and Golden Gate Park. Meet at the entrance to the Garden at the corner of 9th Avenue and Lincoln Way at 8 am. Entrance to the garden is free 7 to 9 am. After 9 am the fee is $ 9. If arriving late, call Eric to connect with the tour (510-410-8351). There is limited parking in the area. Lunch in a nearby restaurant at own expense. Lodging:

Participants to make his/her own reservation. For lodging in San Francisco there are many motels along Lombard Street between the Golden Gate Bridge and Fisherman’s Wharf and more upscale place around town, we suggest avoiding the Tenderloin area near the Civic Center. Staying in Berkeley is an option, San Francisco is easily accessible by the local train system (Bart). the Graduate Hotel near UC Campus is good. There are also good and cheaper motels along the Oakland waterfront.

Meals:

Participants to pay for their own meals. Participants to decide on lunch and dinner together (TBD).

Transportation:

Participant to provide his/her own transportation. Read information under Lodging.

Cost:

Tour is free except for the entrance fee if arriving late. Lodging, meals, and transportation expenses will vary depending on individual choices.

Event:

Anthony Chabot Park - Oakland

Date and Time:

From 2 pm on Thursday, October 10th through noon on Saturday, October 12th.

Location:

9999 Redwood Rd, Castro Valley, CA 94546, El Venado group camp site.

Description:

Camping, climbing and hiking. Eric Folmer has secured a group camp site for up to 35 peoplea grove of large blue gum eucalyptus. The site has limited parking spaces and the access road has a locked gate, so coming and going will have to be coordinated with carpools. There is no access after 10 pm, the main park gate will be closed. There will be an evening presentation about the cultural history of eucalyptus in California and the controversy of the euc-haters versus the euc-lovers.

Lodging:

Participant to RSVP Eric in order to secure a spot (35 maximum occupancy) and copy of the group camping permit and rules. El Venado Group Camp is a primitive group campsite located near the center of this 4000+ acre park. It's the first camp on the road, away from other group camps. It has three 10' picnic tables, a 10' serving table, an extra-large BBQ, 2 drinking fountains with spigots, a CXT vault toilet and a fire circle.

Another option is to stay elsewhere in the Bay Area and join us during the day. The Castro Valley/ Hayward area is relatively close and has various options. Reservations need to be arranged by individual participant.

Meals:

Participants are expected to provide their own groceries. It is expected that shopping and cooking will be organized by the group.

Transportation:

Participants to provide their own transportation. Carpooling encouraged since there is limited parking at the campsite.

Cost:

Cost of campsite, which includes 2 nights will be $20 per person.

The evening of Saturday, October 12th is open. If anyone would like to stay at Anthony Chabot Park, they will have to move from the group campsite to an individual campsite and make their own reservations. People can relocate to another part of the Bay Area or start heading north to Leggett for the official Rendezvous which starts on Sunday, October 13th. Napa Valley wine region is an optional visit on the way north.

Monterey Peninsula

Description:

The Monterey Peninsula is a beautiful location with many options for activities. There is excellent scuba diving in the unique kelp forests, hiking, kayaking, whale watching, and cycling. Monterey was the capital of Mexican California and has several buildings from that era are preserved as museums. The Monterey Bay Aquarium is on Cannery Row of John Steinbeck fame.

Scuba Dive or Hike

Point Lobos State Natural Preserve

Description:

DIVERS - Rent gear as needed Thursday to be ready Friday morning, we recommend the Bamboo Reef dive shop. We will meet at the entrance kiosk when the park opens at 8 am. This preserve has an excellent protected cove for a pleasant shore dive with an interesting aquatic environment. Diving requires a permit and advance registration. Visit: https://www.parks.ca.gov/?page_id=28353 Please note that they only take 12 teams of two people per day. The price is $20/day/team for diving and $10/day for parking. Equipment most be rented off-site. Each team of divers will be responsible for registering. If the site if booked up, there are many good shore dives nearby, no pre-planning required.

Non-Divers - Marine Biologist Dorris Welch will give a pre-dive orientation and lead a hike for the non-divers. Dorris Welch is a marine biologist, naturalist/educator, museum curator, boat captain and scuba diver. She has over thirty years of teaching experience, including leading whale watch charters on the Monterey Bay and natural history ecotours throughout California. Her public speaking gigs include PBS, BBC and NPR appearances and cruise ship lectures worldwide. She began her career at Point Lobos interpreting both the landscape and underwater realms. Her path led her to work as a curator of Natural Sciences at the Oakland Museum and Education Director/Research Coordinator of Long Marine Lab, UC Santa Cruz. Most recently, she spent ten years on Monterey Bay as owner/operator of Sanctuary Cruises Whale Watch. She holds degrees in Marine Biology & Education from UC Santa Cruz and CSU Humboldt. Her passionate, delightfully humorous delivery style brings the realm of natural science to life in a most engaging manner.
